This 8-week live online course (2 hours/week) explores massage therapy as both art and clinical practice, integrating the Expressive Therapies Continuum with principles of neuroscience to expand the therapist’s capacity for intentional, adaptive touch. Participants examine how sensory, cognitive, emotional, and creative processes intersect in the therapeutic encounter, cultivating skillful improvisation, clinical reasoning, and expressive presence. The course frames massage therapists as artist-clinicians, offering strategies to translate creativity into safe, ethical, and impactful client experiences while supporting reflective documentation and professional growth.
Who this course is for
Licensed massage therapists who want to deepen their work as both clinicians and creative practitioners. Especially relevant for those interested in expressive therapies, neuroscience, and developing a more adaptive, intuitive approach to touch.
What you will gain
A working understanding of the Expressive Therapies Continuum and how to apply it through touch. You’ll build skills in clinical reasoning, creative adaptation, and attuned presence, along with language for documentation and reflective practice.
Course Objectives
Describe and apply core neuroaesthetic principles (neuroplasticity, enriched environments, default mode network, aesthetic triad, aesthetic mindset, ritual, novelty) to massage therapy practice within professional scope.
Interpret their Aesthetic Mindset Assessment results pre/post and reflect on shifts in their own creative engagement and professional identity as artist‑clinicians.
Design and document an enriched professional environment that intentionally supports client and therapist regulation, connection, and meaning‑making.
Explain the Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) and use it as a lens for understanding sensory, affective, and symbolic processes in massage encounters.
Produce a reflective case report or professional development narrative that integrates neuroaesthetic concepts and the ETC into a massage therapy vignette.
